First Net Zero Energy Buildings in Hadera (Israel), an example to follow

Hadera, our first member in Israel, is known in its country as an energy city because it hosts critical energy infrastructures such as two national power stations and the world's biggest desalination plant.

But recently, Mayor of Hadera Tzvika Gendelman decided to build an innovative type of building : the "KAYMA" kindergarten is the first Net Zero Building (NZEB) in Israel.

Hadera's vision is to rais awareness amongst children about sustainability, energy efficiency and how they can protect the environment. The municipality is convinced that investing in education from preschool age will bear fruit.

The NZEB kindergardens were designed paying particular attention to the children's health and well-being :

  • control of indoor air quality, testing outdoor air quality
  • non-toxic materials (VOC- Volatile organic compounds)
  • air quality planning during construction and post-occupancy.
Some technical details for reducing energy consumption and offsetting energy consumption by using renewable energy :

  • a passive ventilation system based on a thermal chimney
  • a wind duct located on the roof of the building
  • air quality monitoring system and free-cooling dampers
  • an advanced inverter HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning)
  • hot water needs are provided using thermal solar collectors on the roof
  • a 12-KW solar system that covers ca. one-third of the roof to produce enough energy to offset the annual consumption of the building
  • the windows in the South are shaded, allowing for natural daylighting while preventing overheating.

The municipality of Hadera put a lot of efforts in reducing costs and maintaining them as close as possible to regular construction costs.

Hadera wishes to inspire other cities in Israel and to see more NZE buildings in the coming years.
