Data on dog waste in Paris and other cities
The New York Times (11/1/95, page A4) reports that in cities around the world the canine laws impose fines ranging from $750 (London), $600 (Paris) and $100 (New York). In Paris alone, the city leases 70 motor scooters ("caninettes") to vacuum dog waste from sidewalks at a taxpayer cost of about $8.4 million a year."An estimated 250,000 dogs produce about 25 tons of canine waste everyday, less than half of it sucked up by the "caninettes". An average of 650 people a year end up hospitalized or with broken limbs after slipping on the stuff that's left on the sidewalk, and doctors have warned of a growing danger of parasitic infestations if Parisians don't change their habits soon."
Furthermore, the Australian newspaper "The Age" (11/15/95, Melbourne) reports $500 fines to reduce the amount of dog poo in Melbourne's parks and gardens.
