The Government of Malta requires consultancy services for a study on the identification of the principal activities which are contributing to the high nitrate content in groundwater. The study should also investigate the relative effective contribution of the different pollution sources to the overall contamination of the aquifers. The study shall consider various analytical options which however must include the utilisation of chemical and isotopic indicators.
These services are to include a background study outlining the principal nitrate polluting sources in the islands, the isotopic and chemical characterisation of nitrate-containing waste streams and the receiving groundwater, a technical analysis of the results obtained and hence final recommendations to Government. These studies are to take account of earlier work on the subject.
The study shall be used to support Government in the achievement of the environmental objectives required by the Water Framework and the Nitrates Directives, by effectively presenting a scientific base on which eventual policies and action programmes addressing nitrate pollution in Malta can be based.
