Summary:
A German SME develops, produces and sells high-quality thermoplastic materials based on renewable materials for the plastic processing industry. The materials can be processed like synthetic thermoplastics on conventional plastics processing machines but also have the positive properties of natural wood. The materials can be used in many sectors (e.g. packaging, construction and automotive industry).
The SME looks for a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a technical co-operation.

Description:
The annual global petrochemical plastics production form crude oil is constantly growing and the disposal of used plastic products in waste incinerators leads to the emission of an enormous amount of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Therefore a German SME has developed thermoplastic compounds based on renewable resources that offer an ecological alternative to synthetic petrochemical plastics. The materials they have developed are not only based on renewable raw materials but are also very aesthetic and the material properties can also be adapted to specific product requirements (e.g. strength, rigidity, dimensional stability with varying temperatures).
The material is based on a natural polymer which is found in every tree and every wood plant and like natural wood can withstand tensile and compressive loads in combination.
By mixing specific types of the natural polymer with natural fibres from wood, flax, hemp, sisal or other fibrous plants and natural additives a composition is produced which can be processed at raised temperatures. This material is made into mouldings, sections or panels on conventional plastic processing machines in just the same way as a petrochemical thermoplastic material.

The materials have already been used for a large number of applications (e.g. substrate for veneering wood, flooring, musical instruments etc.) and the SME which also has a lab for material testing provides product development according to material requirements.

The SME is looking for a technical co-operation or the transfer of know-how in new materials. They are also interested in a commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Moreover, they are open to participate in an EU project.

Advantages and Innovations:
The new thermoplastic materials are made exclusively from renewable resources and have several advantages:
- the raw materials are a waste product of other industrial processes
- new end-of-life options: biodegradation of energy recovery (CO2-neutral)
- substitution and thus conservation of limited crude oil resources
- similar mechanical and thermal properties as grown wood (this can be e.g. be very important for applications, such as substrates for fine veneers in automobiles which have to withstand high thermal stress. As the expansion coefficient of the plastic material is much higher than that of the wood veneer, the latter can split , or the veneer will partly delaminate from the substrate moulding at increased temperatures. With the new material this is no longer a problem as it has almost the same expansion coefficients as the covering wood veneer).
- competitive price
- easy to form
- provide a pleasing natural surface

Stage of Development: Already on the market

- Type of partner sought:
Mainly they look for partners from industry. Co-operation with research partners might also be possible.
- Specific area of activity of the partner:
Partners shall process the new plastics and can be manufacturers of semi-finished products or end-users of plastic products.

- Tasks to be performed by the partner:
The partner processes thermoplastic bio-based compounds into semi-finished products. Partners which are end-users are interested in new applications of the bio-based materials or have specific requirements for material properties. Partners should have know-how in composite materials if they want to integrate the new materials.
The company would also be open to participate in an EU-funded project for further research and development.
