Implementation of New Environmental Technology for Oil Industry, Kuçova Region

This four years project to be implemented in 2009 - 2012, its total budget is 25 000 000 CZK (Czech Crowns, approx. 1 000 000 EUR). The budget was approved by the Czech Government. The project was officially opened on 1 April, 2009.

Oil fields in Albania present serious threat for local residents and also for the environment. The project will make comprehensive remediation and minimization of elimination of discharged waste. In Kucova Region, there are massive contaminations by petroleum substances. The contamination in the area is a result of crude oil reprocessing.

The main goal of the project is minimization of environmental risks in the former refinery of Kuçova town and its vicinity. The implementation of the project will be divided into three phases. The first comprises detailed mapping and site screening, inventory of old damages, elaboration of the risk assessment, and detailed documentation of selected riskiest areas. The second covers correction of the detrimental situation of the contaminated sites, re-vegetation - greening of selected zones, training of experts and providing information to public on protection of environment. During the third phase, a detailed project of sanitation of all areal and proposal of future use of the area will be made.

The project will be implemented by Geotest Brno a.s. from the Czech Republic. The company specialises in providing environmental protection and remediation services, hydrogeology and ecological engineering. The company has extensive experience with environment projects in Albania as it already realised a project focused at removal of mercury from polluted soil in the area of the former chemical PVC Plant in Vlora in 2006.
