US aluminum beverage can recycling rate steady in 1999
NEW YORK - The recycling rate for aluminum cans in the United States was largely unchanged at 62.5 percent in 1999, compared with the slightly higher 1998 rate of 62.8 percent, the Aluminum Association and Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries said.
In 1999, the aluminum industry paid almost $1 billion to recyclers for their used beverage cans.
The U.S. produced over 102 billion aluminum beverage cans, of which 1.93 billion lbs were returned for recycling. The number of cans manufactured per pound of aluminum rose to 33.1 in 1999.
As a result, the 63.9 billion cans collected totals 1.93 billion pounds of aluminum.
