World Bank projects to consider environment
WASHINGTON - The World Bank said on Tuesday it was preparing a new strategy to integrate environmental concerns into its development projects.
"The emphasis is on incorporating sustainability into all the Banks activities," said Ian Johnson of the Banks Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development Network.
He said in a statement that the goal of the new strategy was to ensure that economic growth did not come at the expense of peoples health and future opportunities.
The World Bank has been widely criticised in the past for funding projects likely to harm the environment, including most recently a $160 million loan to China for a dam in Qinghai Province.
The Bank said the new proposal called for a "fresh look" at the Banks environmental guidelines and strategies.
