Implementation of environmental legislation on Birds and Habitats Directives
The Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety discussed the implementation of the Birds Directive and of the Habitats Directive, together with Commission representatives. The recent Action Plan for nature, people and the economy will also be looked into. This monitoring exercise aims to identify the areas where there has been successful legislative action and those which need improvement. The meeting will take place on 08.06.17.
Environmental Liability Directive (ELD)
On 8 June, the ENVI committee voted on the above-mentioned draft opinion. The Environmental Liability Directive establishes a framework of environmental liability to prevent and remedy environmental damage, namely damage to biodiversity (protected species and natural habitats), water and land. Based on the polluter pays principle, it obliges the liable operator to take the necessary preventive or remedial action and to bear all costs.

Energy efficiency
On 8 June, the ENVI committee considered the above draft opinion which is part of the Commission's "Clean Energy" package. The proposal intends to establish a 30% energy efficiency target for 2030 at EU level. It maintains the 1.5% per year increase rate in energy savings, and allows the use of both energy efficiency obligation schemes and alternative measures.

Join UN Advocates on 7 June: Global Goals for people, planet and prosperity
On Wednesday, 7 June (15:15-16.30) the Committees on Development (DEVE) and on the Environment (ENVI) held a special meeting with prominent United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Advocates. The meeting has been opened jointly by Parliament President Antonio Tajani and by SDG Advocates Co-Chair Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway.
