An estimated 85% of its known species are found nowhere else; the region has exceptionally productive and sensitive pelagic, seabed, and shoreline habitats; hosts the greatest concentrations of marine mammals, seabirds, pelagic fishes, and sharks in Australia; and supports an annual multi-billion dollar fishery, aquaculture, and tourism economy.
