German coalition close to deal on energy tax - source
BERLIN - A source close to German government coalition talks said yesterday the parties were close to an agreement on a step-by-step reduction in exemptions granted to industry from the country\'s \"eco tax\" on fuel and electricity.
No details were immediately available.
The source said the coalition of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder\'s Social Democrats and the Greens party were still arguing about whether the Obrigheim nuclear power station owned by EnBW should close as planned next January.
Germany\'s aluminium industry has warned any increase in energy prices will mean the death of many smelters in the country.
