Scottish Power wins environmental awareness award
LONDON - British utility Scottish Power Plc won an environmental awareness award at the first annual National Business Awards.
Judges applauded the company\'s commitment to wind power and insistence that the cost of its development is properly recognised and accountable to stakeholders.
\"Renewable energy is still more expensive to produce, but it can be sold at a premium. The important part is to engage the customer,\" said the Scottish Power notes for the award, which was sponsored by Britain\'s Environment Agency.
Scottish Power won out over international courier DHL Worldwide Express, Unilever-owned food group Birds Eye Wall\'s, construction firm Interserve Project Services and oil giant BP Plc .
Other awards, handed out in London late on Tuesday, recognised businesses for everything from their customer focus to marketing strategy.
Former telecoms monopoly BT Group Plc won two - for customer service strategy and advertiser of the year. And the fact that mobile phone group Orange was chief sponsor for the awards did not stop rival mmO2 from picking up an award for sales strategy of the year.
A lifetime achievement award went to John Harvey-Jones, 78, a celebrated industrialist who helped turn around Imperial Chemical Industries .
Luc Vandevelde, chief executive of retailer Marks & Spencer Plc , won the business leader of the year award.
Another big winner was Innocent Drinks, a fresh fruit drinks maker with 23 staff and 7.5 million pounds ($12 million) in turnover. Innocent picked up the small-to medium-sized business award and the investors in people award for small-to medium-sized organisations.
