A new regulatory framework for sustainable batteries
During the ENVI Committee meeting on 11 December, Virginijus Sinkevicius, Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, presented the new and revised Batteries Directive adopted by the Commission on 9 December.
The proposal follows an evaluation into whether the 2006 Directive meets its objectives and contributes to the objectives of the EU environmental policy. Batteries are playing an essential and growing role in our society. They ensure that many daily-used appliances and services like mobility and energy storage work properly. They constitute indispensable energy source and are essential for the green transition. The planned revision of the directive aims at ensuring that the EU regulatory framework can create a competitive, circular, sustainable and safe value chain for all batteries placed on the EU market.
