CARACAS - The Andean Development Corporation (CAF), the multilateral lending branch of the Andean Community, said last week it had signed a $13 million loan to Ecuador to clean up its principal port of Guayaquil.
The CAF said in a statement that the loan would be used to construct and maintain waste dumps and for an educational project to prevent the further contamination of the Salado estuary.
These tidal waters outside Guayaquil are used to dispose of sewage, even though they are bordered by low cost housing, the CAF.
The CAF has already awarded the municipality of Guayaquil a $57 million loan this year for a highway project.
