Czech Geological Survey Wins 2004 Special Achievement in GIS Award for Exceptional Work with GIS

San Diego, California—The Czech Geological Survey (CGS) received a 2004 Special Achievement in GIS award for its exemplary use of GIS technology. ESRI, the world leader in geographic information system (GIS) software, presented the award August 12, 2004, at the Twenty-fourth Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, California, before thousands of GIS professionals. Winners of this award were selected from more than 150,000 organizations worldwide.

”The organizations winning this award have used GIS to produce profound work that benefits their businesses as well as the world around them,” said Jack Dangermond, ESRI president. ”They deserve to be recognized for the dedication and diligence apparent through their work with GIS.”

Information about a location is stored in a GIS as a collection of layers that can be visualized simultaneously or individually, allowing users to store, analyze, and display this information in accordance with their needs. The enhanced visualization gives planners, analysts, and others a better understanding of an area, leading to better decision making abilities.

CGS collects and assesses data about the geological composition of the state territory and provides the information to the authorities for political, economical, and environmental decision making. Using GIS technology, CGS stores critical data that is used both internally and externally, manages tasks and disseminates information.

It is with great pleasure that ESRI honors the Special Achievement in GIS award winners for their part in making a difference in communities around the world. They exhibit the innovation and commitment that lead to countless possibilities with GIS technology.

Other organizations honored at the 2004 User Conference include World Campus GIS Certificate Program, Pennsylvania State University; State of New York Power Authority; Vodafone, Germany; Brussels International Airport, Belgium; Nebraska Health and Human Services System; Branner Earth Sciences Library, Stanford University; Petrobras, Brazil; and the State of Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
