Let's Do It! Mobilized 3 Million Volunteers in the Waste Cleanup Actions Worldwide in 2016

All together, 16,8 million people have throughout the years stood up against the waste problem and took part in Let's Do It! country cleanup actions around the world.

Massive cleanup actions took place in Romania (200 000), Bulgaria (150 000), Albania (100 000), Ukraine (764 000), Lithuania (260 000), Hungary (190 000) and Latvia (190 000). Sweden held an extended cleanup campaign over the course of three months, involving almost 768 000 school pupils.

Smaller actions were also held in France, Hong Kong, Macedonia, Philippines, Russia, Switzerland, Kosovo, Montenegro, Estonia, Croatia, Greece, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Belarus, Moldova and Argentina.

Some of these countries are still reporting their exact participant numbers, but countries like Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden managed to engage more than 5% of the population.

Eva Truuverk, one of the initiators of the Let's Do It! Movement said that with the World Cleanup Day approaching, the results are a nice buildup for the worldwide one day action. "In the current phase while we are looking for talented leaders internationally who can make 5% of their country's population come out on September 8th, 2018 World Cleanup Day. I believe this years results are showing great promise. However, even the smallest action can bring understanding about the scale of the problem, how no man is an island when environmental pollution is concerned," she added.

The one day cleanup, called the World Cleanup Day, aims to engage people in 150 countries to stand up against the global trash problem and clean up waste, making it the biggest positive civic action the world has seen on September 8th, 2018.

The latest cleanup actions took place from September to November in 7 countries, Switzerland, Russia, the Philippines, Moldova, Macedonia, Romania and Argentina. Argentina held a riverside cleanup, and Moldova cleaned up their national parks.

Let's Do It! Romania held their fifth country wide cleanup action in September engaging 200 000 volunteers. The action was equally popular among the younger and older generation. The youngest participant was 3 years old, who went to clean up illegal waste with his parents. The organizers were also impressed by the commitment and energy of an 80 year old lady who also cleaned up.

According to the board of Let's Do It! Romania, they are glad to see that more and more people are offering their time to this cause which has become already a tradition in their country. By today, Romanians have started to understand that constant involvement is needed in order to change mentalities and really improve the waste problem.

Let's Do It! World is the outcome of a massive volunteer initiative, pioneered in Estonia in 2008, when 50 000 volunteers cleaned up 10 000 tonnes of illegal waste in just five hours. Officials estimated that the initiative saved local governments three years of work and 22,5 million Euros. The idea quickly caught on, and has since spread globally, having now grown into a network of over 100 countries.

On September 8th, 2018, Let's Do It! World will organize a massive World Cleanup Day, with 150 countries cleaning up waste on the same day.
